SBIR grants are a great source of non-dilutive early stage capital for startups, but the application process can be cumbersome.
The University of Illinois’ EDA University Center has resources to help navigate the process. Recently, they helped Digital Dipstick win a $224,000 grant for their ag tech innovation. Natural Fiber Welding also won an SBIR on the same magnitude of Digital Dipstick’s.
I think a nice goal for GP startups is $1 million in SBIR awards by 2020. We’re halfway there already, but it’s going to take work to get achieve that goal.
